Why Filter?

What's in Australian tap water?

Australian tap water is treated to meet the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines set by NHMRC. Treatment typically includes chlorination (to kill bacteria) and, in some regions, fluoridation (for dental health).

While Australian tap water is considered safe to drink, many people choose to filter it for taste, odour, or to reduce specific substances that they prefer not to consume.

Common substances in Australian tap water

  • Chlorine & chloramines — Used for disinfection. Safe at regulated levels, but can affect taste and odour.
  • Fluoride — Added in most capital cities for dental health. Some people prefer to reduce their intake.
  • Lead — Can leach from older pipes and plumbing. More common in older homes.
  • PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) — "Forever chemicals" that have been detected in some Australian water supplies, particularly near certain industrial sites or fire training facilities.
  • Sediment — Particles from pipes or infrastructure.

Does Pureo filter all of these?

The Pureo Tap Filter is designed to reduce chlorine, fluoride, lead, PFAS, and sediment. Actual reduction rates will vary depending on your local water quality, water flow rate, temperature, and filter age. We encourage you to test your water before and after if you have specific concerns.

Is Australian tap water dangerous?

No. Australian tap water meets rigorous safety standards. Filtering is a personal preference — many people do it for taste, others for peace of mind about specific substances.

If you have concerns about your local water quality, the best starting point is your water utility's annual water quality report, which is publicly available.
